Why do cats scratch?

Posted by
ursulakatariina (Ed, Sweden) on 23 January 2017 in Animal & Insect.

Cats scratch to keep their claws in good condition and to prevent the claws from growing too long. Not very often one finds claws that are shedded like these two are, but this is perfectly normal too. Under the shedded claw the cat has already grown a new one and the old one is dropped off cause it's no longer needed. So don't be angry if your cat scratches your sofa, it's just giving himself a manicure! :D

Nice to see you! I hope you enjoy seeing what I saw earlier.
Please, leave a comment so I know you have been here.

I got a colour spotlight, see it here.

Please read this.

Jypyä Pop from Turku, Finland

Is not the best way to manicure the cat, after all, not scratching the wood board. The sofas are so expensive.

@Jypyä Pop: Lyckily it's easy to trim the claws and give something else than the sofa for the cat to scratch. :)

Devi from Chennai, India

Oh My God!! Never knew this !!
I think the cat owners better equip the home with special Scratch Boards and train them...yes..like Jypya says, the sofas are expensive!!!

@Devi: That's why we have scratching posts and cardboard scratching boards for thr cats.

@omid: Thank you!

Ruthiebear from Titusville, NJ, United States

I did not realize this. I see why scratching posts are needed.

@Ruthiebear: Yes, this is why I have more cat furniture than furniture for humans :D.

B. Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United States

I keep my cats claws trimmed, and have lots of cardboard scratchers. It helps save the furniture. They are used to the trimming, and don't seem to mind.

@B. Thomas: I trim their claws too, mainly just the front paws. We have cardboard scratchers and scratching posts too but the cats seem to like our sofa more...
