On an ice road 2

Posted by
ursulakatariina (Turku, Finland) on 12 February 2014 in Transportation.

This is the ferry that travels to Hailuoto. It is running all winter too for those who don't want or can't use the ice road.

Last sunday The Artist took me for a car ride on an ice road that is made every year between Oulu and Hailuoto. The road is about seven kilometers long and the views are great.

I got a colour spotlight, see it here.

Please read this.

Jypyä Pop from Turku, Finland

My my chair is a ferry at that place a little less than 700 miles to the north. Here you can walk to either go out on the ice and there is driven cars. There is therefore considerable.

@Jypyä Pop: Yep, a bit thicker ice up north...

Is the ice road over the frozen water? This image really shows how cold it is! Love the pop of color.

@Ruthiebear: Every winter when the sea freezes enough the Finnish transportation agency opens an ice road to this place (and to some other places too), it's basically a way plowed on the ice and there are no additional structures added to support the road. If the ice breaks the ice road breaks.

Loukas from Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece

Really beautiful and ...cold place

@Loukas: Thank you! On that day it wasn't too cold, I think it was maybe few degrees above zero. :)

The Mouse from Glasgow, United Kingdom

You seem quite close to that boat, I hope the ice is plenty thick!

@The Mouse: I was a bit worried when I realised how close the ferry was sailing...
